Unlike the popular bright, colourful landscapes, his early period paintings showed a dry, uninhabited land. However, such an Armenia exists as well; and, indeed, while traveling through Armenia one might be astonished to see Hagopian’s paintings coming to life in the nature. This new unconventional image of Armenia created by Hagopian received instant recognition. There is the land, the sky, the posts of the electric lines stretching towards the horizon and then a few trees. Sometimes instead of trees there are bare, leafless vines. Hagopian’s favorite time is autumn when the trees are leafless and early spring when nature is awakening from winter and the trees are covered with white flowers. The emotional message is, as usual, toned down, and the paintings create a serene atmosphere, electrified from within. |
