Hagopian belongs to a generation of Armenians, who as a result of the 1915 genocide, grew up away from their homeland and were painfully aware of their forced estrangement from Armenia and their yearning for their homeland. At age 40 his lifelong dream came true and he moved to Armenia with his family. Right away the artist developed a truly philosophical perception of the life around him and a profound insight into the new world he found himself in. Once in Armenia he could no longer portray people the way he had done before, neither could he paint the kind of still life he had produced in Egypt. He had to seek a different path for himself and turned to landscape painting for the first time. Through landscapes his emotional bonds with Armenia became manifested in his work. |
